Lucy Hutton and Joshua Templeman sit across from each other every day . . . and they hate each other.
Not dislike. Not begrudgingly tolerate. HATE. Lucy can't understand Joshua's joyless, uptight approach to his job and refusal to smile. Joshua is clearly baffled by Lucy's overly bright clothes, quirkiness, and desire to be liked.
Now they're up for the same promotion and Lucy, usually a determined people-pleaser, has had enough: it's time to take him down. But as the tension between Lucy and Joshua reaches its boiling point, it's clear that the real battle has only just begun . . .

The Hating Game is one of those books where “I’ll just finish this chapter” turns into you surfacing from the story three chapters later. Many laugh out loud moments and Lucy and Josh are great characters. Very happy to have been a part of their journey. Now to find more of Sally Thorne’s books!

Reread April 2019: Loved this reread even more than the first. Adored every word. 26/11/16: This was absolutely delicious!! I loved the Narky hate games, the competition. The complete nerd-fest. The dorky Skype-ing with her parents. Little Fat Dick. All of these things made me laugh. The hate gave way to awareness of the other. The chemistry was off the charts, you could cut the sexual tension with a knife. OMG, this author has an amazing way with words, with projecting imagery and feelings through the POV of Lucy. I felt everything. The pages of delicious kissing and touching, discovering, feeling. One giant foreplay of sensations. This is slow-burn hell, or slow-burn heaven, depending on how much you love the tease. The best!! Just to give full disclosure: this was a library paperback loan, which took me nearly a month to read the first 45%. Not because of the book, but the timing. Sickness circling around my family, world events surrounding an election, sickness circling once again... Picking up the paperback to read a chapter here, a chapter there was a complete joy, and I was in no rush to hurry it through. Then last night I hit that place of no-return, reading well into the night alone on my couch with the lights on - as you do with a freaking paperback!! Picking it back up and reading obsessively today while grateful kids were happy to chill and watch movies... Well mostly ;-) This goes into my favourites list, I cannot believe this is a debut novel!! I wait in great anticipation for more from this author.

The Hating Game- Review
The Hating Game by Sally Thorne follows Lucy Hutton, the assistant to the Co-CEO of a publishing company, as she attempts to out-hate her co-worker Joshua Templeman, whom she can’t stand. The two sworn enemies indulge in juvenile ‘hating games’ as they are forced to sit opposite each other in the otherwise mundane office every day. When an opportunity arrises for one of them to achieve a promotion within the company, the hating games rise to a new level as Lucy will either relish in being the boss of Josh or quit. The closer she gets to that promotion, and the more time she spends with Josh in the process, the more she starts to realise that she might not hate josh after all. This book is written in the first person from Lucy’s point of view. What I liked about this is that I felt like I was really in Lucy’s head, listening to her thoughts. It’s much easier to read a first-person POV if the character is likeable, and in this case I found Lucy to be incredibly likeable for the most part. There were a few eye-role moments where she would come across as especially childish for a character in her late 20s, but the hating games themselves are quite childish and I know people in real life who would 100% do this so I can’t really hold this character trait against her. Lucy suffers from a pathological need to be liked by everyone and goes about her life being extra nice and trying to please everyone (except Josh). This is a trait that a lot of readers, including myself, can identify with, especially when in a position of authority over others. She has many insecurities that she tries to overcome with a bubbly and agreeable personality, which is often taken advantage of. The only person she does not treat this way is Josh, and part of the enjoyment factor of this book is witnessing her confidence grow throughout the book as she spends moe time with Josh. I found myself internally cheering for her as she started to stand up for herself more. This book is a light, easy read and is cute and funny in its narration. This does mean that the direction of the plot can be incredibly predictable at times and there are a couple of small twist moments throughout the book that the reader will see coming a mile away. It is pretty obvious from the get-go that Josh is head-over-heels in love with Lucy but this isn’t necessarily a bad thing because it helps Josh come across as a more likeable character. Without this assumption he would come across as a typical jerk and we as the readers might not root for him to get the girl as much. Josh has his own insecurities and though there are a couple of moments throughout the book where his character flaws manifest in some pretty unlikeable ways, part of his journey in this book is learning that it’s okay to put down his jerk disguise and be a nice guy sometimes, which is an understanding that Lucy helps bring out in him. If that doesn’t give you the warm fuzzies while reading, I don’t know what will. One thing I disliked about this book is its lack of resolution. Even though the plot is first and foremost about Lucy and Josh falling in love with each other, it introduces the plot point of the promotion and then never really resolves it properly. Considering this is one of the driving forces behind Lucy’s conflict throughout the entire book, the fact that it is resolved off-page is a little frustrating. Once they fall in love, the book ends and that’s it. I feel like this could have been handled better. Overall, I really enjoyed reading this book and give it four out of five stars. There are a couple of grammatical errors throughout but considering it is written more like a stream of thought-process, this isn’t particularly distracting. Anyone looking for a light fluffy romance to curl up with will love this book. I wouldn’t recommend it to people looking for more substance in plot though. I will probably definitely pick this up again in the future.

My book club picked this book for this month's reading- our last book was Blink by Malcolm Gladwell which was the complete opposite. We were all keen for something a bit more ..chill. this book definitely fulfilled that requirement. I finished it in a day.. and l can honestly say it's not high brow reading but boy if I did enjoy the whole thing. It surprised me in that it had less drama than some of the other books I'd read in this genre which is so nice. All in all, it's a fun read 👍

But as the tension between Lucy and Joshua reaches its boiling point, it's clear that the real battle has only just begun . . .

Wonderful!

But as the tension between Lucy and Joshua reaches its boiling point, it's clear that the real battle has only just begun . . .

But as the tension between Lucy and Joshua reaches its boiling point, it's clear that the real battle has only just begun . . .
This bestselling, laugh-out-loud romantic comedy is an unmissable, utterly loveable treat and is perfect for fans of Sophie Kinsella's MY NOT SO PERFECT LIFE or Jo Watson's LOVE TO HATE YOU

Enjoyable read
The Hating Game is one of those books where “I’ll just finish this chapter” turns into you surfacing from the story three chapters later. Many laugh out loud moments and Lucy and Josh are great characters. Very happy to have been a part of their journey. Now to find more of Sally Thorne’s books!

Wonderful!
